Foster Care

Students in foster care are the responsibility of the child welfare agency and are placed in 24-hour substitute care away from their parents or guardians.  This includes, but is not limited to, placements in foster family homes, foster homes of relatives, group homes, emergency shelters, residential facilities, child care institutions, and pre-adoptive homes.  

 

Sometimes a student is placed in a foster care setting that falls within the boundaries of a different public school district rather than the school district the student was enrolled in at the time of his/her placement into foster care.  In these situations, a best interest determination (BID) must be made as to which educational setting is best for that particular student.
